French teacher tells of racist abuse by schoolchildren.

Miss Ganneval who taught French at the school for nearly two years said she also had her car vandalised by pupils.

She was eventually diagnosed as suffering from anxiety and depression, she told the hearing in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Her GP advised her to resign and she did so last June.

Miss Ganneval has now launched a legal battle for compensation from the school and Essex county council. She claims she was constructively dismissed because she was a victim of racial discrimination, and is demanding compensation for abuse suffered as well as for loss of earnings.

Miss Ganneval told the tribunal the abuse started soon after she joined the school on a temporary posting in September 1998 before she got her permanent job there in January 1999.

Miss Ganneval said the school’s head teacher, Caroline Hobbs, reacted to her initial complaints by holding an assembly about racism.

She said that in July 1999 she was circled by pupils riding bicycles and yelling racist abuse as she left the school. When she reported the incident, she was simply advised not to walk back to her car alone.

Her friend Maria Cascon, a Spanish teacher at her former school in Ipswich, said she remained friendly with Miss Ganneval after she got her job in Colchester and witnessed the abuse she had to put up with when she visited her and they went for a walk in the town.
